Gateway Children’s Services is Joining the Global #GivingTuesday Movement to Help Children in Need

GivingTuesday, taking place on December 3, 2019, is a global day of giving that encourages individuals, communities and organizations to give and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Gateway Children’s Services is asking for our community to show up, give back, and help abused, neglected and abandoned children in need by donating on #GivingTuesday.

Gateway Children’s Services helps Kentucky’s most at-risk children and families receive the care they need through a Residential Program, Emergency Shelter, Therapeutic Foster Care, Adoption Services, Outpatient Behavioral Health & Substance Abuse programs.  The residential program and emergency shelter, located in the heart of downtown Mount Sterling, provides a safe, structured program with school instruction, therapy and physical well-being, all while being surrounded by caring people.  In a recent youth satisfaction survey, 100% of youth in the residential program believe Gateway’s staff care about them and they feel safe.

Founded in 2012, GivingTuesday has inspired millions of people to give back and support the causes they believe in. Asha Curran, GivingTuesday’s CEO and co-founder said, “We believed in the idea that people fundamentally want to give and to talk about giving. People and organizations around the world proved us right. As we prepare for December 3, we’re energized and encouraged by the community’s generosity.”

CEO Joe Gomes said, “Our goal is to raise $20,000 for our children to help buy clothing, medical supplies, sponsor outings/activities and we also need to replace a commercial grade dishwasher for our kitchen.  All donations, no matter how big or small, will matter in a life of a child in need.  We are good stewards of our money and donations never go to pay for staff salaries – all donations go directly to help the children who need it the most.  We appreciate our supporters and I hope they will join me in making a meaningful donation on Giving Tuesday.”

Those who are interested in joining Gateway Children’s Services #GivingTuesday initiative can donate online at  www.gatewaychildrensservices.org/givingtuesday or mail a tax deductible donation to 37 North Maysville, Mount Sterling, KY 40353.

Gateway Children’s Services Awarded $420,000 Grant from Federal Home Loan Bank-Cincinnati.

Gateway Children’s Services recently announced they received a grant from Federal Home Loan Bank-Cincinnati (FHLB) in the amount of $420,000 to purchase the Adrian Arnold Building at 37 N. Maysville St, which serves as their primary location.  Gateway Children’s Services CEO Joe Gomes said the vision to purchase the building came about as a result of their board of directors and staff strategic planning process two years ago. Gomes stated, “as we started looking towards the future changes in the child welfare system, we wanted to ensure that we had sufficient funding to continue strengthening our current programs such as Residential Treatment Services, Therapeutic Foster Care, Adoption Services and Outpatient Behavioral Health Counseling.”  Gomes added, “by purchasing the facility and utilizing the FHLB grant as partial payment on the building, we are able to reduce our overhead expenses and reinvest this savings in expanding programs that provide services to Kentucky’s vulnerable children, youth and families.”

Gomes said they worked with several community partners to realize not only the purchase of the building, but to obtain grant funding as well.  “We initially approached Daren Turner, former owner of the building, and communicated our vision for the future of our organization.  Mr. Turner completely supported our plan and agreed to sell us the building.  We then began looking for funding options and applied for grant funding with FHLB-Cincinnati.”  Gomes explained that FHLB grants are very competitive, and the entire process took approximately 18 months.  Gomes added,” We are also very appreciative of the support and guidance we received from Traditional Bank, who served as our partner bank in this endeavor.”
